Welcome to Faces in TheNight

Welcome to New York, home of the city that never sleeps. That couldn’t be more true. Angels and Demons play tug-o-war with souls while Reapers look to claim them and take them to their rightful destination. Humans fight to be heard while Witches fear to be seen. Shape shifters are the outcasts of this world, but refuse to be put down. Werewolves claw to be at the top of the food chain, but Vampires are always plotting and scheming to be superior. Just like the land, the waters are also teeming with life as the Merpeople have their own network of life and enemies to defend against. Valyrian is a bustling realm of Elves and Dragons that fight their own war.

Welcome to a world where nightmares come to life. The day time isn't all that safe either. Who do you align with? Where do you stand in this crazy life? Or will you be just another face in the night?

Central Park was becoming a popular haunt for her in the day time. While sulking along in the bright sun wasn't her favorite thing to do, it made spotting her slightly easier, it was worth it for the haul she could bring in. At night her dark fur blended in better with the vast shadows but in the day...in the day she had to plan her scurry accordingly to make sure she wasn't spotted before she had time to nab her prize and get away. Given the nice weather later summer always brought it was no wonder there were so many people out eating their lunches from brown bags or even bringing full spreads to eat on the grass between tossing a frisbee or some other flying object around. Summer was when she ate well and she was much like a bear as she could beat - eat as much as she could so that when winter rolled around again she'd at least have some fat to keep her going when scavenging would be harder. She was no longer above eating from trash cans, hadn't been for a while, and even though it wasn't the healthiest way to live it was better than eating five course meals at a table she didn't want to be at.

She paused in her lurking behind a tree and scratched at the enchanted collar around her neck with a back paw, the dirt encrusting it making it hard to tell that it was a fairly expensive piece of jewelry. The matted fur it often got stuck to helped people overlook the diamond encrusted leather and kept her from being attacked for it. Of course she would have gladly surrendered it if she could but getting it off was impossible, at least for her. She would need to find a witch willing to help her but given her experience with strangers she wasn't so willing to ask for help in that department. It was the only thing she had of value and one day she'd need to to leave the life she was currently leading. However, until she could find someone she could trust to help her remove the thing she was stuck living on the streets and stealing picnic baskets or whatever scraps people were ignoring and making easy targets.

For the moment she had her eyes on a decent sized basket sitting forlornly in the middle of a red checkered blankets as it's family was tossing around a foot ball until they were hungry enough to eat. Not a single one of them was paying attention to their set up and Svetlana was sre the basket was just small enough that she could drag it away into the bushes nearby to raid it and stuff her face in order to quiet the growl rumbling in her belly.

Once the itch was chased away she peeked around the tree she had stopped behind body low to the ground and one ear trained on the family while the other swiveled around to listen for any dangers. A lick of her maw later and she was darting off, a dark form skittering through the shadows of the trees until she could get to the basket. Once there she hunkered behind the thing, peeked around it to check that the owners were still otherwise engaged, then sunk her teeth into the side of the wicker container. She started tugging and yanking it backwards to towards the thick brush, all senses alert to anything that might call an alert to the thieving fox.

It had been nearly a week since the incident at the compound and she had come to the city for her latest checkup. The doctor said everything looked good with the babies, so she'd gone and bought herself some lunch to eat under a nice tree in the park before going home.

Even though she was in neutral territory, she was still on alert. She was always on alert when she was away from the compound or her husband. After 260+ years of slavery, you learn not to trust most people, and today she was on her own. So she kept her senses cranked to 11 while she slowly ate her sandwich.

It wasn't long before she noticed a little shifter slinking through the bushes and trees. She watched for a while, forgetting her not-so-small lunch. When the little black fox went dashing over to an unattended picknick basket, she let a soft growl slip from her lips.

She waited for the dirty little shifter to look over at her before speaking softly. "But Yogi, Mr. Rangers' not gonna like it." She just watched the little shifter for a moment before holding out the uneaten half of her foot-long meatball sub.

She was hoping it worked, seeing as she was too massive to move quickly enough to catch even a common dog right now. After a long moment, she gently shook the sandwich, trying to entice the little fox. "Not like I can catch you even if I wanted to. It's free food." She patted her house-sized belly. "Pregnant ladies don't usually share. I'd take the offer if I was you." After that she just waited.

The growl was not lost on the little fox's ears; given they were up an alert for any such warning noises it came in crystal clear and she froze, teeth still sunk into the wicker basket. Gold eyes darted around for a moment until she located the source of the growl and she released her captive prey in order to lift her head and sniff at the air, pulling in the woman's scent. She wasn't much familiar with supernaturals scents, she just knew when someone smelled different (she could sniff a witch out easy as pie, however) and this woman was different. One ear swiveled towards the families whose food she was trying to steal as they all seemed to burst out into laughter at the same moment.

The world the strange woman uttered at her didn't make sense, even with her semi limited understanding of English, but the act of holding out the delicious smelling sandwich in her direction had a meaning clear enough for her to understand without the use of words. It was...easier than taking the basket and with another look shot at the family she noticed they were all gathering, probably coming back to eat, and she made up her mind.

Tail tucked between her legs she darted towards the woman and the offered sandwich. She stopped just short of the woman, belly low to the ground, ears flat against her skull, and lifted her nose up just enough to catch the scent of the food. The woman shook it and spoke again and Svetlana understood some of the words while giving the sub a little shake. The shifter took a moment to really look at the woman and she did, indeed, look heavily pregnant. Even if she wanted to she might not be able to harm Svet, the fox was small and sleek and could get away easily if need be.

Her stomach let out a whine, wondering why she hadn't taken the food yet, and she - very gently - snatch the sandwich from the woman's hands and pulled it beneath the bench the other was on to devour it. She made little sounds in the back of her throat between bites, clearly fox noises, of pleasure as the still warm meat and bread slipped over her tongue to fill her belly. No sandwich had ever tasted so good at this one did.

Xanya watched as the dirty little fox decimated the sub. Pulling out her phone she texted her husband about the little creature. It wasn't long until her phone rang. The Geico jingle came on and she sniffled as she answered. "Hi elskling." There was a long pause as she listened to him rant and holler. She rolled her eyes.

"It's neutral territory! And I told you I was.." She had simply pinched the bridge of her nose. "Shut up. You know you love me. Would you be mad if I brought a hungry little shifter home?" Again there was a long pause. "Fox."

She held the phone between her ear and her shoulder as she opened her bag of chips. Putting one in her own mouth, she held another down to the little fox. She kept rolling her eyes and humming in a 'yes' type manner. She continued to feed most of her chips to the little fox if she kept taking them, only eating one herself every so often.

She sighed heavily. "Yeah yeah. Never again. Got it." She smiled down at the dirty little shifter and showed it the empty bag with a frown. Because she was still on the phone, she patted her belly and pointed to her mouth a few times, trying to ask if the little fox was still hungry.

"Yes, Dag!" Her voice was a laugh as she placated her husband. Patting her belly again, she pointed to her mouth, then the little fox with a questioning look on her face before making a walking motion with her fingers and pointing to the Subway just across the street. "Ok. Jeg elsker deg også. I'll be home soon. We're going to get someting to eat."

Her brow pinched and she was sure she looked irritated. "Because I'm about to pop and I'm hungry! Pause. "Yes, I did just share most of my lunch with my new friend. I'm still hungry. I'm going to buy us lunch and we'll come right home. Du har mitt ord." Ending the call, she sighed.

Looking down at the little fox, she smiled softly and pointed to the Subway again. "Care to join me for more?" She was kind of sad because she recognized the look in the little shifter's eyes. She could remember seeing it in the mirror after she had first been freed from slavery herself. This poor little fox has no-one.

Struggling to her feet with many a grunt and groan, she put a hand on her lower back before she started to waddle towards the Subway. Looking over her shoulder she waved her hand in a 'come on' gesture as she continued to make her way slowly out of the park.

The sudden sound of the woman's cell phone startled her and she jumped but it wasn't enough to make her run, not with food in front of her. After the initial spook she went back to finishing the half sub given to her by the lady. If Svet paused long enough to think about it if it had been a man offering her food she might not have so readily accepted the offered snack even as hungry as she was. Men had proven to be nothing but evil and the only woman that had been horrible to her had been her aunt so while she knew women were capable of cruelty, to her, men were the only ones capable of doling out the kind of abuse she had seen at their hands. This small part of her brain that registered this fact was thankful it had been a woman as it meant she got to eat and eat rather well in this moment. It would be enough to hold her over for awhile at least.

When the chips started coming she made a small little sound in her throat, a little chirp like thrill and her tail twitched a few times as she very gently took the chips from the woman and devoured every one of them offered to her once the sandwich was gone. Each chip offered to her got her a little more out from beneath the bench she had hidden under to eat so that the woman would have to reach so far as she conversed with whomever was on the phone. There were many words she didn't understand and she only caught some of the English as she was a little more worried about what would happen in the here and now, every muscles still ready to bolt if she needed to. The woman wasn't a threat, it was anyone else around them really that Svet was trying to pay attention to while also eating all the pregnant woman's food.

The woman laughed and Svet jumped again, eyes flicking up towards the woman's face just in time to catch the action she made. Signals were something Svet could readily understand given her trouble communicating with words it was often how she communicated with others - others being those who had been assigned to 'watch and care for' her when she had been at his mercy. Her stomach, though full of sandwich and chips, actually growled when the meaning came across as if to announce that, yes, she was still hungry. She could have spoken her answer, she knew enough English to do so, but she was so used to...not speaking that she simply let her stomach answer for her. It took her a moment longer to realize that the woman was inviting her to go get more food. Her ears immediately perked up, her tail did that twitching thing again but it stopped when she thought about going to a more enclosed space. A space where her ability to run away would be hindered.

A very subtle whine left her as she looked over towards the subway even as her nose twitched to suck in the smells coming from the building. Her attention shifted back to the wolf as she struggled to gain her feet and something told Svet she'd be safe by this woman, a feeling she didn't often have and if anything her time on her own had taught it it was to trust her instincts, they never lied. So, as the woman began to waddle towards the subway Svetlana walked as close as possible to her without tripping her and followed her. She kept herself as small as she could, tried to blend in with the other females shadow but...she went.

Smiling down at the little fox, she continued to make her slow way over to the Subway. Holding the door open, she let the little fox either go first or check out the inside. Either way, she entered the building and stood in line. She rubbed her swollen stomach as she waited to order.

"I'll have 2 foot-long meatball sub meals. Provolone on both." Looking down, she squatted next to the dirty little fox. Her voice was low enough that only the shifter could hear her. "Do you speak English?" Her head tilted as a soft smile graced her face.

Before she could get an answer, the boy behind the counter leaned over and spoke. "Ma'am? Are you... Oh. I can't have the dirty fox in here. It'll have to..." Her hard eyes pinned him to the spot as she struggled to stand again.

Her hands shook as she placed them flat on the counter. "Are you discriminating against shifters? Because that's a federal offense." She wasn't sure if it really was federal, but she knew it was in the discrimination laws in the state of New York that shifters were protected. The boy shook his head fervently. "Good. I wouldn't want to have to report this." She eyed him before finishing their orders and paying.

Once she collected their subs, she walked over to the chip stand. Looking down at her little friend, she pointed to the chips and held up 1 finger, trying to tell the dirty little fox to pick out a bag for herself. Xanya grabbed a bag of Cheeto's for herself before wandering over to the drink dispenser.

Filling her large cup with Dr. Pepper, she filled the little fox's with water. Bending down, she held her hand out for the bag of chips. She took it if it was given to her, otherwise, she struggled to stand again and walked to the door.

Holding it open, she let the little fox out first before walking over and sitting at one of the outdoor tables. Setting their food down, she pulled out a chair for her new friend before sitting across the table. Opening one sub, she laid everything out in front of the fox, even going as far as taking the lid off the cup of water and dumping the chips out onto the wrapper of the sub.

Doing the same for herself, she smiled softly before tucking into her own food. Occasionally she ate a Cheeto between mouthfuls of meaty cheesy goodness. It wasn't until she was done with half her sub and most of her 'chips' that she looked up and set her hands on the table. Her eyes softened as she watched the dirty little shifter. "So, do you speak English?"

It was some kind of talent how close Svet walked next to the woman and didn't trip her. After a few months of weaving through NYC foot traffic, and wheeled traffic, she was very good at such maneuvers. It also let her peek in but not be away from the shelter of the wolf's presence and already she could feel her heart starting to pound in her chest at the idea of being trapped in a place with no easy exit. Again she told herself that this woman, huge as she was with child, would probably be one of the scariest people in the place should they try anything against either one of them. Again she had no proof of this other than what her gut was telling her and that was good enough for her. She still didn't like it but it made it just slightly easier to walk in there with the woman, that and the smell of food.

Her mouth started to water at just the idea of getting a whole sub for herself but she was distracted as the woman came closer to her level and her gaze shifted from the giant counter to the woman now in her view. Her ears pinned to the side of her head, not at the question, but at the person now leaning over the counter and speaking of her as if she were...well..exactly like she looked. Her presence in the shop couldn't be very sanitary, she couldn't remember the last time she had a proper bath and not just stood in the rain to try and get the grime from her fur. At least she wasn't back where the food was actually prepared, right?

Then, her gut feeling was proven true when the wolf stood upright and stood up for Svet in a way that she could even smell the trepidation on the rude man behind the counter. Part of her wanted to laugh at the way the boy responded to the wolf but she didn't, instead she just let her ears lift again and she did her best to ignore him now that the wolf had put him in his place. When she got the message about being able to pick a bag of chips she spent a moment sniffing at the bags, she couldn't read them, and ended up very gently closing her teeth around a bag of nacho doritos and carried that along behind the wolf as she took the cups given them to the dispenser to fill. She even sat patiently until the wolf relieved her of the bag of chips and happily followed the woman out of the store.

The moment they were back outside the better she felt as fresh air kissed her fur. She was already feeling better before the woman even pulled the chair out for her which she nimbly hopped up onto and she watched, with wide eyes and watering mouth, as the wolf laid everything out so beautifully that Svet couldn't believe it was all for her so she had to take a moment to let it feel real. It was when the wolf laid out her own meal that she finally hopped up onto the table, to be able to read the food, and tore into it as ladylike as she could while in her current form. Half of her own sandwich was gone as well when the woman finally repeated the question Svet hadn't been able to answer. It was one question she didn't need to think about, to mentally translate.

Licking sauce off of her muzzle she did struggle, for a moment, to remember what words she needed to use to answer her question as well as how to form them correctly.

"Little," she had settled on one word, and easier word though it still felt strange to be speaking at all.

Xanya had coyly watched the shifter eat. How long has it been since this poor soul ate last? It hurt her heart to think that the fox was all alone. Her eyes softened further as tears welled behind the dams of her lids. She couldn't leave the shifter behind.

Xanya was surprised when the fox's voice came out female. Suddenly, the tears broke free and rushed down her face. She couldn't help it. This girl's situation reminded her so much of her own. She wanted to reach across the table and gather to poor girl into her arms.

She stopped herself and wiped her tears. She knew the touch wouldn't be welcomed. This girl would probably not allow others to touch her for at least half a century. Hell, it had taken Xanya half a century to turn human, then another decade before he allowed her now husband to even take her hand to help her learn to walk on her human legs again.

Taking a deep breath, she smiled a watery smile at the little fox before her. She gestured to the food, trying to tell the girl she could keep eating while Xanya got herself under control once again. It took her a while, but once she was herself , she wrapped up the other half of her sub and leaned back in her chair.

Eating a Cheeto every now and again, she thought on how she was going to broach the subject of inviting the girl home. She tilted her head from side to side as ideas were thought out fully. Most were rejected purely because they required too much talking.

With a long slow breath, she folded her empty chip bag into a little square and turned it this way and that as she tried to get the words out so the girl could understand. She pointed at herself, "I speak English.", then she pointed at the girl with a questioning look on her face. "What do you speak?"

If she could figure out what language the little shifter spoke, she could use Google Translate to get her point across. She didn't talk slower than normal or like the little fox was stupid. She had been speaking normally the entire time because the easiest way to offend someone was to treat them like they were stupid. She wanted to avoid that at all costs.

Taking another deep breath, she cleared the last of the tears from her eyes. Placing her hand on her chest she introduced herself. "I'm Xanya... She gestured towards the girl before her. "...what's your name?" She couldn't just keep calling the her 'little shifter' or 'little fox'. She wanted to be able to address her as if she were a friend, and friends had names and stories. She wanted to learn this girls story.

Her ears pinned back against her head and her posture sunk lower to the table as the woman started crying. Svet had no idea why the other female burst into tears and for a moment she thought it was simply because she had spoken (she had no way of knowing it was indeed the trigger) but reminded herself that was silly and it probably had to do something with hormones. People were always talking about hormones when it came to pregnancy. So instead of trying to figure out if there was more of a reason to the tears, and at the woman's motion, she lowered her head and slowly started to eat again though she kept an eye on the other the whole time.

She continued to eat and wait as the female did her best to collect herself. The woman was confusing mostly because Svet could tell she was thinking about something but had no idea what it could be; she couldn't even figure out what had triggered the tears but she hadn't enough people skills to put puzzle pieces together. The possibility that the other woman was thinking about how to invite her home never occurred to her, was in fact the farthest thing from her mind. She had made up her mind that she'd never figure it out and was too hungry to really try to even though she was still paying attention to the lady across the table she was more focused on the rest of the food before her.

She almost jumped, did startle a bit, when the woman started speaking again. Most of the sandwich was gone, the chips certainly were, and Svet was grateful that she spoke slowly enough for her to try and process the words and not leave a gaping silence while she tried to translate rushed words. One would think that with how long she had been in the states she could have a better grasp of the English language but isolation did not make for the best education. She learned what she could from conversations around her, what little television she was able to watch and with no one to speak to she had no way to practice. It had all been what he wanted. To make sure she'd never be able to ask for help, that no one but he would understand her. He hadn't counted on her being more observant, alert, than she appeared and she had learned enough to understand much of what was being said to her even if it took a while for her brain to put it into her own language.

She hesitated mid chew as the woman asked her name after giving her own - a name that she couldn't even begin to try and pronounce, couldn't even get the right letters to form in her head. She was far enough away from him that it should be safe to say her name, it was a common enough Russian name and she was sure he didn't have ears and eyes out this far, so she hoped anyway. He hadn't introduced her to people beyond those like him and the guards assigned to her given what he was doing was illegal, that she was illegal, so telling this woman should be fine. Should be. So, she ventured out a little from teh safe bubble she had been trying to live in and spoke her name.

"Svetlana."

Xanya smiled at the girl. "Svetlana. That's a very pretty name." The way the girl turned her letters seemed somewhat Russian, maybe Latin? Going for broke, she pulled her phone from the depths of her massive purse and opened Google Translate. She hit the little speaker on the Russian side of the app.

Her phone instantly asked the shifter if she understood, only in Russian. Xanya waited, watching the girl for any signs of recognition. If this works, I'll need to start learning Russian. Especially if she comes home with me. She admonished herself for jumping ahead. She still needed to figure out which language the girl spoke first.

She watched and waited. It seemed like forever. She fidgeted as she set her phone on the table between them. Her knee started to bounce and she fiddled with her folded chip bag. She hated feeling unsure of herself. She was an AoA Mate, she should never show weakness or seem unsure of something. She should be able to command any situation with naught but a glance.

This was nothing new. She was always like this when she was as big as a house. She had taken in many in need over the years. Most of them had gotten back on their feet, healed their hearts and minds, and moved on. There were still a few that came back or never left. There was always room at the compound for those in need. Dag never complained when she brought 'strays', as he called them, home.

He understood that she saw herself in them. She wanted to save them, give them what he had given her. He had given her life and love, a home, somewhere safe to hide from the world. He was already aware that there was another person coming home with her if she could communicate her intentions clearly.

If the girl looked like she was about to speak, Xanya hit the microphone icon so that the phone could catch and translate her response to English. She left the input language blank so that Google could decide which language Svetlana was speaking. It would be quickest this way, she decided.

She was more than ready to get back to the safety of the compound and her husband. The city unnerved her, but she tried her best to appear unfazed by it all as she sat in the open with the girl. Something feels wrong. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end as she suddenly realized how exposed they were. She took a slow, inconspicuous look around, but couldn't spot anything of immediate concern. She swallowed hard and looked over at the little fox sitting on the table as if nothing was awry.

Svet watched as the woman dug into her purse and her head leaned a little closer to her, nose twitching as if she could smell if the woman was going to pull a weapon or not. Given how nice she had been thus far Svet was sure that wasn't going to happen and realized that this was the safest she had felt since she had escaped. Even with the collar around her neck it was almost easy to forget that she was most definitely not safe and wouldn't be until she was able to get that collar off and get off the streets. Even then with her illegal status in the country she would never be one hundred percent safe. If immigration found her she was in deep shit but at least it was better shit than if he found her.

Xanya pulled out her phone and did something with it before turning it to face the little fox and it spoke to her. Her ears perked at the sound of the Russian and her head bobbed, almost happily, in response to the question. It was good to hear her own language, better even to know that she wouldn't have to struggle to speak to the woman across from her. She'd have to wait for the phone to do whatever it did to translate but it would take a lot of the effort out of the conversation for the shifter.

"Thank you, for the food," she spoke in Russian at the phone and while it set to work translating for her she woofed down the rest of the sub she had demolished and then set to cleaning any sauce from her paws and face as best as she could. It was easier once she took a drink of water, using the cool liquid to both cleanse her fur and slake her thirst. If she noticed Xanya seemed unnerved Svetlana didn't notice, probably because Svetlana herself was always unnerved and on edge and waiting for something to go wrong at any moment. She may look, and feel, the most relaxed she had felt in a long while but one ear was always on the move, listening for any sort of approaching threat, all her extra senses also still on high alert...just in case.

It is sometimes essential for a husband and a wife to quarrel – they get to know each other better

Merissa + CDT + She/Her

Her eyes lit up as google thanked her for the food in Svetlana's place. Peeking at the phone, she noticed that she was right on her first guess. Smiling softly, she picked up the phone, switched languages and spoke into it. Setting it back down between them, she watched carefully as google spoke in Russian.

"I would like to offer you sanctuary on pack territory. You can come and go as you please, but you will have the protection of 30 thousand wolves. There will be plenty of open space for you to explore or take time for yourself, as our land is away from the city. You can say no. I'll understand." Xanya smiled softly at the dirty little fox. She wanted so bad to get some soap to that fur. She had no doubt that the girl would shine like liquid night once all that grime was washed away.

It hurt her heart to think of having to leave the girl here, alone in the city. So many things could go wrong. The girl was obviously having trouble fending for herself if their first interaction had been Xanya stopping the girl from stealing a picnic basket. This poor girl. She needs someone to look out for her. She fought back her tears, knowing that she could help the girl before her.

She tried not to let her tears spill over the dam her lashes had made. She was still unsettled by something, but she was more focused on getting Svetlana to the relative safety of her mom-mobile. Dag had made poor Trent trick it out. She might as well have been driving an M4 Sherman Tank. The only thing missing was the artillery. Seriously, what did her husband and Puppy think was going to happen to her to warrant this much of an overhaul to a fucking suburban?!

She knew there was a tense sort of alliance between the packs, but the worst that either of the other packs would do to her would be kidnapping her. They wouldn't risk an all-out war with the other two packs by killing her. The only way the packs would go to full-blown war was if both packs were in league against her husband, and if that happened, they'd know about it well beforehand.

Sighing lightly, she turned her attention back to what was bothering her at the moment. Something was wrong. It almost felt like someone was watching her, but she couldn't see or hear anyone around that was giving off any signs of deception. Scrying spell? She hated witches. She hated everything they stood for. She couldn't stand the idea of either of them being spied on by witches and a low growl left her lips as her eyes slowly worked over the mass of bodies flowing around them. She was very much ready to be back home, where it was safe.

She needed to convince the skittish girl to come with her. She couldn't let someone hurt the little fox. If she had to stay here all day to convince her to come, she would. She couldn't abide anyone hurting this sweet child. She tried to suppress the low growl, but it still rumbled deep in her chest. She didn't want to frighten Svetlana, but she was on edge and her first instinct was to fight her way out.

Being pregnant, she couldn't fully shift to protect them properly. She could still use her claws and teeth, but she wasn't agile enough to slip from anyone's grip. She'd have to get in close and risk her children and the little fox. She didn't like this situation even the slightest. She needed to get them out of there, and she needed to do it quickly.

Pulling her phone back towards her, she spoke clearly, but swiftly before letting the phone do its thing. "What do you say? Would you like to come to my home?" She smiled softly at the girl across from her. She rubbed her distended stomach beneath the table. It was a nervous habit she had developed over the years to soothe herself when she was anxious about something. To anyone else, it just looked like she was rubbing her stomach to be close to her children. She left them to their delusions and sought comfort where she could.
