Barclay was your stereotypical witch. She loved cats and she owned three sweet little rescues. Ivy was her cuddler. Her sweet little girl who thrived on contact and all the love Barclay was willing to give. She had been contacted by a friend that worked at a shelter that they had received a purebred Ragdoll cat. Purebred cats at a shelter were a rare thing. They were ready to put her up for adoption, but thought they would contact her first to see if she wanted her. She jumped at the chance and took the first cab to the shelter. As soon as she was cleared for adoption, she packed her in a crate and took her home. Ivy wasn’t her first cat. At the time, she had taken in a pair of older cats who just needed a home until their time came. After they past, she quickly went back to the shelter and adopted another.

Thistle was the lucky kitty. She was a just a kitten when Barclay brought her home. Usually she didn’t bring home such young cats, but Thistle was an exception to the rule. She had a heart murmur. Many were scared to bring her home because they didn’t know what that meant. If handled and cared for correctly, an animal with a heart murmur could live for a very long time without health complications. Barclay was willing to give the grey tabby kitten that time and care.

Next came her most recent cat, Bramble. He was another kitten, but she couldn’t not take him home. She found him in a box on the sidewalk. Written on the side was ‘Free kittens’ in sloppy handwriting. He was the last one. His eyes were barely opened and she knew if she took him home that he could die. She couldn’t just leave him there to die though. She would have rather to have tried than never tried at all. She took him to the vet to make sure he was healthy then gave him all the care he needed. She did all the late-night feedings and kept him nice and warm. Much to her and everybody else’s surprise he survived. The little tuxedo kitten is still going strong and getting himself into any trouble he could think of.

Today was no different. She was tending to her shop when she realized only two of her cats were lazing around the shop in peace. There was never any peace with Bramble around. He was always stalking or pouncing on something or someone. The shop was quiet so she went looking for the mischievous kitten. He was nowhere in the back and she hadn’t accidently locked him in the freezer, something that happened more times than not. He wasn’t anywhere upstairs. She began to panic. Had he slipped out when one of her customers came and went. He was still rather small so he could have done so unnoticed.

She tried to stay as calm as possible. She closed the shop for the afternoon and headed out to look for him in the surrounding alleyways. Nothing. She looked to the street, thinking the worse, but there was no sign of the little kitten. She ran up and down the street calling his name and asking if people had seen the little tuxedo kitten. Nothing. It wasn’t until she heard little mews coming from a drain pipe coming down the side of a building from the gutter. “Bramble?” She called softly and waited for a response. Little mews and scratching sounds came from the drain pipe and she gasped. She tried to see if she could reach her hand up and grab him, but it was no use. He was stuck and the more he struggled, the worse he made it. “It’s ok Bramble. I’m going to get help.” Out of impulse, she pulled her phone from her pocket and dialed 911. When the woman on the other end asked for her emergency she blurted out “I need help! My kitten is stuck up a drainpipe.”

New growth cannot exist without first the destruction of the old

Mason + Eastern Standard Time + He/Him

In a city as big as New York, there is hardly a day that can go by without a call in, whether that's a false alarm or not. People rang in for various things, ranging anywhere from a large burning building to a worried neighbour about a backyard bonfire. At the very least, it led to an interesting profession which, at the end of the day, was something most people couldn't really complain about. Not Finn away. Despite that, however, the station had been fairly quiet, longer than any one fighter might expect. Finn rested against a small bay window, his back against the window sill while his leg hug on the ledge, hanging. With his eyes closed and hands resting on his lap, the witch enjoyed the heat of the sun through the window, letting himself drift into a light nap.

Throughout the firehouse, other on-call fighters relaxed as well, enjoy the moments of quiet. Across the room from Finn, a few other guys played a game of poker, the clicking of chips loud in the quiet house, occasionally accompanied by a small unimpressed murmur or a short conversation about luck or bluffing. Despite what might be expected for a firehouse, the place was almost picturesque, most of the tenants doing their own calm thing. The house couldn't stay like that forever naturally. When they least expected it — as it was unexpected in every case — the alarm went off, blazing throughout the firehouse to signal their call to action.

Immediately all personal responded, dropping whatever they were doing. Finn jumped to his feet, blinking the remnants of drowsiness as he ran to get changed. The fighters all filed in, quickly putting on their heavy gear in an impressively efficient manner. It was obviously well rehearsed. Ready, Finn made his way towards the garage, where he and the rest of the team were greeted by their fire chief. She stood there, stopwatch in hand letting the seconds add up until the last person was there. "Four minutes and eight seconds." She announced once everyone arrived. "You're getting sloppy on me. Especially you Anderson," she pointed out to the tall man who arrived last.

"Foruntately for you slugs, it's not urgent. Dispatch phoned in a 'trapped cat', so head on over. And I better hear that cat got home safe and sound." To the chagrin of some of the other firefighters, they made their way over to the trapped cat. The chief a known hardass, but she came from a good place, and gained the respect of most of the firefighters in the house. She was younger than what might be expected, but it was clear that she took her job seriously, something that Finn respected. It also helped that off duty, the Cheif could be a raging good time.

Arriving at the area, Finn hopped out of the truck and made his way to the distressed young lady, who was obviously worried about her cat's well being. "Hi," he spoke firmly but sympathetically. "You've got your cat... suck in a tree?" The end of his sentence finishing somewhat unsure as he realized he didn't actually know where the cat was trapped.

It was only a few minutes before the firefighters arrived, but it felt like forever. She spoke calmly to the struggling kitten as he continued to wiggle his way up the drain pipe out of fear. She paced along the sidewalk. She felt people’s eyes on her as she did so. A couple of people asked if she would be alright. She just nodded and gave them a smile.

The more she thought about it though, the more embarrassed be became. Did she look like the worried cat lady? Was that going to be her future? The lady who called 911 if her cats got stuck somewhere? She sure hoped not… She watched as the fire truck arrived and pulled up beside her. If people weren’t looking at her before, they definitely were now. She pushed her bright red hair behind her ear and looked to the firefighter who approached her. Her cheeks grew bright red as he spoke. There were probably several better things he could be doing right now besides rescuing her kitten from a drainpipe.

“No. No tree.” She said. I could have gotten him down if it was a tree… She thought to herself. “He found his way up this drainpipe.” She said, gesturing to the drainpipe that was fixed to the side of the building. The person who seemed to be in charge of the building the drainpipe was now outside. He didn’t seem too happy, but that wasn’t important now. If they ended up cutting open the pipe then she would pay to replace it, but right now her kitten was much more important than pleasing this stranger. “Can you help him? His name is Bramble.” She asked, her blue eyes pleading for help.

Finn looked down at the young lady as he blushed and explain the situation of the cat. It wasn't the first time the department had been called out for situations similar to this, and it wouldn't be the last. A few month ago, in fact, he was brought out to a school during an end of year carnival they were having. They parked their truck in the back of the schoolyard and joined the number of kids running between booths. Finn didn't mind the atmosphere, in actuality, he enjoyed it. He was happy to answer the questions for the kids or lift them up into the truck or take pictures with the kids and hand out "Jr. Firefighter" stickers. It was all part of the job, and that was more than okay.

It was clear that this woman cared about the well being of her pet, so he offered her a small smile. "Don't worry ma'am, we'll rescue your cat." His voice was calm but confident. He glanced over to the drain pipe in question to where Brambles was trapped. Finn himself wasn't much of a cat person, but he had to admit that "Brambles" was a fairly cute name for a cat, especially one that apparently liked to get into trouble. Leaving the redhead, Finn called out over Anderson and Pierce to inspect the drainpipe with him. As they got closer, the soft cries of the cat could be heard from inside the pipe.

Pierce crouched down, trying to look into the pipe, but the cat was too far up the drainpipe to see clearly. He reached in to get a feel, but only managed to get the end tips of the cats tail.
"He's pretty far up there," he told the pair as they watch the drainpipe.

"Alright. We'll detach the pipe from the top and run a tape from the top to see how far deep the cat is, and we'll cut it from there." Happy with the plan, the two men went off to the truck to gather their supplies as Finn walked back over to the redheaded lady.
"Does Brambles get into trouble like this often?"

Barclay could hear the echoing meows from inside the drainpipe. She wasn’t sure how the kitten had wedged himself up the drainpipe, but he was rather small for a kitten his age since she had bottle fed him since he was nearly a newborn. His curiosity was much bigger than he was. Probably too big. Hopefully this prickly situation would teach him a lesson, but she had a feeling he would have to outgrow his urges.

She glanced up at the firefighter as he came up to her. She gave him a friendly smile, something she was expert at no matter who approached her. “Thank you…” She said softly and peered worriedly over at the drainpipe as the firefighters began to mess with it. She almost wished she had tried to reach her arm up the pipe, but she was sure she wouldn’t have bene able to catch him either. Plus, she wouldn’t have wanted to scare him even further up there.

She listened as they came to the conclusion that they would have to cut the pipe in half to get him out. She would talk to the owner of the place later and talk about payment. She felt terrible for mangling the front of their building, but her kitten had to come out. She didn’t leave him behind the first time so leaving him here was not an option.

Stuck in her own thoughts as she was approached again, she didn’t notice his presence until a second later. “Not to this extent. He doesn’t usually go outside unless he escapes somehow. He’s only escaped once before. Something must have frightened him and he scurried up the pipe. He didn’t go this far either.” She said and looked to the firefighter. “Hopefully he doesn’t make it a habit to be a little escape artist. I’d hate to have to keep him to the confines of my apartment.”

Naturally, as with most times there is a firetruck outside a residence or business, groups of people started to form to see what the commotion was about. In this instance, however, the group, if it could even be called that, wasn't particularly large. It consisted mostly of neighbours or pedestrians who happen to pass it on their way. The general calm demeanour of the firefighters and lack of any smoke or actual fire didn't really scream excitement. That demeanour was a good thing though; Finn wanted to avoid panicking Bramble's owner as much as possible. She seemed like a woman who didn't like to worry others, but it was clear that she was deeply concerned about her cat.

Running a hand through his hair, Finn stayed by the woman, offering her a presence of comfort while the other fighters began disassembling the pipe. Occasionally it would mew, especially as the pipe was moved horizontally, but it was mostly drowned out by the work. He looked down towards the woman with a small smile as she addressed him. "Hopefully not, but cats are sort of rambunctious, aren't they?" he joked, chuckling a bit. There was a small pause before he looked up towards the floral shop. "Maybe it's best he didn't find himself in there," he added, nodding towards the shop. "Cat like Bramble might get into a whole bunch of trouble in there."

Barclay didn’t like being the center of attention. She liked to blend into the wall and not be noticed. She only put herself out there when she wanted to. She felt like she was just a Plain Jane sometimes, but she was content with the way she was living her life. Right now though… she would have preferred to blend into the background or at least be in her cozy chair in her warm apartment sipping her favorite tea. But she was here with people giving her odd stares. Her rosy cheeks were heated with embarrassment.

She peered up at the man beside her when he commented that cats were rambunctious. She gave a soft laugh. “You have no idea… I’ve had quite a few.” She said with a nostalgic shake of the head. She pushed her ginger locks behind her ear. She grew up with a couple then after she moved away she couldn’t tear the one she had away from her mother. The cat was supposed to be her own, but it ended up getting along with her mother much better. They say that animal chose their owners and well… Her cat had chosen her mother. It would have been selfish to take the cat knowing it wouldn’t be happy with her.

She peered down the sidewalk at her flower shop… The one he was referring to… She let out an awkward laugh and peered up at the fire fighter. “I… That’s my flower shop…” She said and looked to the pipe with the mewling kitten was stuck. “And yes. He tends to get into a lot of trouble in there, but he doesn’t get stuck in drainpipes in there so it’s a win win.” She said and looked back up to the fire fighter. "This might sound random, but I've been told I make some really good tea... Homemade stuff. Not that stuff in the bag with the string... Would you like to come over for some tea later? As a thank you..." She gave a half smile. She knew a good person and she saw one and this firefighter seemed like one. Trent would probably flip if he knew she was invited a stranger over for some tea, but what he didn't know wouldn't kill you.

Finnigan was not without his flaws, like any person, but he considered himself to be a good man. At the end of the day, he enjoyed being able to help people, especially those he cared about. Still, though, he could tend to be a bit awkward at times, mostly in the fact that he never knew what to say. It was hard to miss the woman blushing, which only made Finn feel more unsure of how to continue. He was sure that any attention from the commotion she received was unwarranted, but he wasn't exactly sure what to say, other than to smile and agree or nod. The witch needed to be in a different state of mind to start a conversation; things that tugged at his curiosity took the lead in those situations, forgoing any awkward or uncomfortable tendencies in place of interest or preservation or desire.

It's not so much of the silence that made Finn feel uncomfortable, the silence he was completely content with. No, it was more the expectation he believed others to have of him in social situations; it's not much of a conversation if only one person is talking. The redhead seemed like a gentle soul though, and anyone who cared this much about a cat couldn't be all bad, so he looked down to meet her gaze, giving a warm smile and a bit of an amused chuckle."I think it'd be rather rude of me to deny tea," he replied, dialing up his accent just a tidge more in a playfully joking manner. "I finish my shift in a few hours. I could stop by then if you'd like." He extended his hand to offer a firm shake. "I'm Finn."

And then, as if on cue, Anderson managed to grab the cat, pulling it from the pipe before grabbing the scruff of his neck to lift it into his arms as he walked over towards the pair. "There, all safe and sound."

Barclay liked to think she was a good judge in character. Some might call her crazy, but she was always willing to give people a chance if they didn’t try to harm her. She had befriended a demon with such ease it was almost scary. To some that was like an antelope befriending a lion. He was kind to her though. He’d never posed any threats or made her think ill of him. He was her favorite customer. And it wasn’t just because he was kind to her. She might have had a crush on him, but he was always coming in to get flowers for others so she knew she didn’t have a chance. It didn’t mean she couldn’t just admire him from a distance. Some might think of her as naïve, but she wasn’t. She was always thinking with her heart and not just her heart.

She smiled up at him when he accepted her offer of tea. Her light blue eyes brightened a bit. She loved having company even if it was just for tea. She must had been too distracted to notice his accent. She gave a soft laugh and pushed her hair behind her ear. “Perfect. That’s perfect.” She said. “I close up shop right around then as well.” She said, not sure if she was going to actually going to open the shop back up for the rest of the day. She wanted to make sure Bramble was doing alright and didn’t need to be seen by a vet. Not that she thought he would be injured. She was just a worried cat mom.

“Oh! How rude of me.” She said shaking her head at her brief lapse of ignorance. “I’m Barclay.” She said and reached out to shake his hand. “I should have introduced myself sooner. I’m sorry.” She said then peered over to the pipe as she shook his hand. One of the men were able to reach in and pull out the little tuxedo kitten. He seemed to be quite shocked, but in good shape. “Thank you. Thank you so much.” She said and took the kitten from his arms. She snuggled him against her chest and nuzzled him with her face. “Bramble you naughty kitty. You scared me.” She said softly and kissed the top of his head.

She peered over at the firefighter that pulled him from the pipe. “Thank you.” She said before looking at Finn. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Finn. Thank you for keeping my company.” She said before glancing around. “Thank you all…” She said feeling like she should stop thanking people. She looked at Finn with a smile. “I’ll see you later. Ring the doorbell even if the shop is closed.” She said before turning and heading back to the shop to settle her kitten down and check him over.

With a small but warm smile, the witch agreed, watching Barclay return to her shop before heading back towards the truck with the other fighters. As per usual, the group of men joked with each other on their way back to the station; busting each other's balls and enjoying each other's company. As always, the drive back to the station was faster there than on the way out. The rest of Finn's shift was rather uneventful, save for some rowdy firefighters, but had passed fairly quickly. By the time his shift had ended the sun was already set and some heavy clouds started to roll in.

Without a need for anything special or particular, Finn went right from the station towards Barclay's flower shop. He didn't need to dress up for their small meeting and he didn't want to arrive too late and encroach on her hospitality, so he made his way back towards the shop. A deep, bone-chilling wind swept through the city, making it very clear that winter would soon be on its way. Finn paused for a moment, looking up at the heavy clouds, wondering if they would get any snow tonight. Another gust of wind caused him to shiver, before shielding his face, or at least his chin, behind the top of his coat.

The Englishman stopped once he got outside of the flower shop, peering into the windows, though they mostly seemed covered with a great number of flowers and plants. Finn adjusted himself and fixed his coat before he rang the doorbell. The night air was harsh on his bare skin, so he quickly returned it to the protection of his pocket as he waited for Barclay, as per her request.

Upon returning to her shop, Barclay closed up for the rest of the day. She didn’t have anybody coming by to pick up anything and it had been a quiet day to begin with so she didn’t see a reason in staying open. She took her kitten up to her quaint little apartment and put him away in her bedroom to rest. The poor thing buried himself in the decorative pillows of her bed. He seemed to have learned his lesson. Good. She didn’t want to have to be concerned about him becoming a constant escape artist. She just flipped the light off and shut the door quietly behind her.

She peered around her apartment. The scattered corpuses of her cat toys were all over the place. Crinkly little balls and plushie mouse bodies were all over the place. It seemed as if play time was over as everybody was sound asleep in their respective spots. She sighed and began to clean up to mess. She knew having three cats made her look crazy enough. She didn’t need the many scattered toys on the floor to make it obvious. She collected the many toys and placed them in the basket and placed it in the cabinet under her television. She did a little dusting and swept the hardwood floors.

She got out all the things she needed to make tea and put a pot of water on the stove to boil. She didn’t know what Finn liked, but she had all her herbs and such at hand and ready to go. While the water began to heat, she moved into the living room to sit for just a few minutes. However, the doorbell rang just as she was settling down. She quickly straightened herself out and headed downstairs to let in her guest. She gave a friendly smile through the window as she unlocked the door. “Hi Finn. I’m glad you can make it.” She said and let him inside. She locked the door behind him. “I live upstairs.” She said and waved him on to follow her as she moved through the shop and up the set of stairs that was tucked away in the back of her shop. One wouldn’t even know that there was a staircase back there. “I don’t know what kind of tea you like, but you have all the options in the world.” She said as she stepped into her cozy little home. “I grow most of the herbs myself or I get them from the farmers market down the street on Saturdays.” She said, pausing briefly. “I’m sorry. I’m babbling.”
