She could feel the warmth of her tears form but before they could escape Katalina closed her eyes tightly, trapping the tears. She wouldn’t – couldn’t let herself cry. She had already cried enough tears to fill a lake and she promised herself she wouldn’t shed another one. Of course, that was easier said than done. Her head fell to the side and rested against the cold glass of the bus’s window. The crisp cool against her forehead seemed to help and freeze her tears in place. She stayed like for a few minutes to the point in almost falling asleep until a baby’s cry brought her back to reality and she could feel her skin began to burn at the baby’s distress. It wasn’t magic more like a strong second sense. It was that sense- empathy, whatever you want to call it, that fact remains that it made Katalina hate being around people.

Kat plugged in her earbuds an in attempt to drown out the world around her and the crying baby once more and it worked as the music playing in her ears allowed her to escape from reality as her eyes felt heavy and when she couldn’t keep them open and allowed them to fully close. The young witch drifted off into an uneasy sleep, nightmares still plagued her dreams. The images of her dead lifeless parents flashed in her mind. She had learned how to manage those dreams but now- a flash of her aunt’s dead lifeless body flashed in her mind, jolting Kat awake with a startled. Her eyes were wide as she frantically looked around and breathe a sigh of relief as she realized it was just a dream and she sat back. Her heart raced in her chest and she had to will it back to normal.

Once she finally calmed back down, Kat gave up on sleep altogether for the last part of the journey and steeled to sketching idly in the book she brought along. After five hours of being trapped in enclosed space like a bus, Katalina had finally arrived in New York City. She didn’t push her way off, but she was close to it when the other passengers took their sweet time. It felt like time had slowed to a crawl as she waited for the other people to move off the busy. She tapped her foot impatiently as the older gentleman in front of her moved like a snail as he fetched the bag that got lodged under the seat in front of him. It felt like he moved slowly on purpose just to torture her and his irritation was rubbing and scratching on her nerves like sandpaper. She was about to offer her help only to make his move faster when he finally got it dislodged and exited the bus.

“Never again,” Kat muttered to herself as she was freed from the bus and swung her bag over her shoulder. She hurried to get as far away as she could from the rest of the coward exiting the bus. She had a feeling if she had to spend another second with them she would go mad.

She had been to New York City before, but this time it felt different. The only other times she had visited the city was with her aunt or with friends but, never on her own. It was an odd feeling to have. Maybe it was more to the fact she had up and left her old life to start anew. Or that she didn’t really have a plan of actions. There was something freeing about not having a plan and totally opposite of her normal self. She used to be a planner and a good one, but life had a way about unraveling your plans that Kat decided it did matter any more and so here she was, in a new city to start a new life with no real plan.

Kat spent most of the day wandering the streets of New York. She kept her camera in hand and was able to get some incredible shots. It was the first time since the death of her aunt that she felt nothing, as she got lost in her work. She had even lost track of time as her focus was on capturing the different aspect of the city and it's inhabited with her camera, it was only when the battery died that Kat had realized the day was over and the sun was starting to set on the horizon. It was also about this time that her stomach announced that she hadn’t eaten at all today and was now demanding substance other than water. Giving into her hunger’s will Kat started her way down the street to find a place to grab a bit to eat.

This city was the perfect hunting location. All these souls crammed into a small area, all trying to make it in the same space. And what made it even better was the daily influx of brand new souls, some of whom weren’t looking to leave. Just like Hell, the space remained the same but the crowds kept on coming. Although she was sure Lucifer had something in mind for that particular issue.

Katja didn’t make a habit of hanging out around the docks and terminals but today she fancied something new. She had thousands of souls in the works throughout the city but just like the humans, it was never enough. There were always more souls to be corrupted. Some could be done in a single moment but others needed years of poking and prodding to get her desired outcome.

And what was this outcome that she wanted? Why it was a marked soul of course. Katja was a big fan of simply taking but there were rules, even for demons. When you had eternity, it was best to have some kind of job to keep you occupied. And Katja was big on proving that she was the best. She knew it however it was one thing knowing something and another proving it.

Today had been a mix of the usual stresses and excitement from the new arrivals. Katja had a nose for spotting the unusual stress and it took no time for her to sniff out the upset witch. Katja was no amateur though. Rather than approaching immediately, she kept her distance, using the crowds and shadows to keep herself hidden whilst still able to see the witch’s movements.

With the crowds, it made it harder to pinpoint her exact thoughts, although Katja could feel the pain within her. It was that pain that made her stand out in the first place. Pain was like a cheat code to a demon. Pain made everything much easier to control. For Katja, the witch losing control actually made her job much easier as those in pain often wanted quick releases to get rid of the pain.

Soon enough it was getting dark and the witch ducked into a small family diner. Katja didn’t catch the type of diner as she followed in swiftly through the shadows, taking a seat to the side as to appear like she was already there. No better way to make someone miss a tail if you’re in front of them. For now, she would watch.

When Kat was seated in a booth she closed her eyes and sighed deeply. She had been on her feet all day roaming the city and she almost forgot how good it was just to sit down. She stayed like that for a good minute before a waitress came to take her order. She ordered and when the waitress turned to leave she hauled her bag into the seat next to her as she fished out another battery for her camera. While she fished around the bottom of her bag she had the odd sensation that she was being watched. Her hand paused as she looked up and around the room. Her gaze landed momentarily on a beautiful blond woman and sitting by herself. Kat just smiled politely at the woman before adverting her gaze just in case the woman found her staring rude. She didn’t see anyone else at a first glance that may have been watching her and just shrugged off the feeling as her fingers finally found the battery.

“Found you!” She said in victory as she popped the dead battery out of the camera around her neck and replaced it with a new one. The waitress returned with a sandwich and a cup of coffee and set it on the table. She only lingered a moment longer to see if Kat had needed anything else before disappearing to attend to her other customers. Kat ignored the food for the time being as she powered on the camera and began to scroll through the photos she had taken today. She only paused once or twice to take a bite of her sandwich or a sip of her coffee before continuing the daunting task of scrolling through hundreds of photos.

Her head snapped up again as the feeling of being watch sliver down her spine. She felt like she was a mere mouse waiting to be pounced by a cat but as she looked around the dinner again, nothing seemed to be amiss. She just told herself that she was being paranoid before finishing her meal. The waitress poured her another cup of coffee as she passed by with the coffee pot in hand. Kat was about halfway through the photos when she began to notice the same person appearing in most of her shots. She zoomed in and noticed it was the same blonde woman that sat in the dinner now. It could just be coincidence but Kat typically trusted her instinct and something told her that feeling of eyes upon her belong to the woman.

Kat left cash on the table to pay for her meal as she stood up and swung her bag over her shoulders. Instead of heading for the exit she went to the table the woman was at. “Excuse me,” Katalina said as politely as she could. “This may make me sound crazy, but are you following me?” She wasn’t the type to sugar coat anything and might as well get to the point.

Katja knew all too well how to look normal and had followed suite with ordering some food and drink. She was always partial to some eggs and bacon. With a side of toast, she was settled with her food, keeping an eye on her prey between bites. That wasn’t to say she wasn’t watching everyone else within the cafe either. Everyone had secret desires that could be played with.

Still, it wasn’t missed when her prey kept looking her way. Katja kept an eye right back, finishing her meal in a polite yet quick manner. She wasn’t here to savour the meal. This was merely a starter. The main course was still under preparation. However, she did not expect her prey to make a beeline straight for her and laying her cutlery down alongside her plate, turning to meet her new friend.

Turning her head gently, she met the eyes of her prey and smiled politely. ”My dear, how observant you are. I can see that I have been tasked with a smart soul. My name is Katja and I am your guardian angel. Sent down from Heaven above to see your safe arrival to this city and to keep sin from crawling into your soul. Please, take a seat. We have much to discuss.”

It was a risky play. Every child was warned of the signs of a demon like the fairy tales of old. But who knew how to play an angel better than a demon? All she had to do was think what wouldn’t she do and there she would find an “angel”. This was the kind of challenge she needed right now. It had been some time since she had worked so individually on corrupting a soul. Often she hit hard and without tact. Today she would trial a bit of tact.

Kat shifted her backpack on her shoulders and watched the woman carefully set her utensils down, effectually giving Kat her full attention. Something about the way the woman looked at her sent a cold shiver down her spine. However, Kat had no way of knowing what that look had meant as it was gone just as fast as it was there washed away by the smile she gave her.

When the woman introduced herself as Katja and claimed to be her guarding angel, Katalina could not help her self and laugh. “I’m sorry,” She finally managed to say after a few seconds to regain her composure. She typically wasn’t a rude person or at least she tried not to be, but being told you had a guardian angel just seemed ridiculous in Kat’s book. She wanted to laugh again as she played the words in her head but the serious look Katja had on her face made Kat bite back the laugh.

“You can’t be serious?” She said still in disbelief. “You can’t honestly expect me to believe that? It sounds crazy.” Well, it wasn’t exactly that crazy since she was a witch but if this woman was, in fact, a crazy person, Kat wasn’t about to let her on that little secret. Besides if she truly had guardian angels, why would they care about her now? Where was she when her parents died or her aunt a week ago?

Snorted to herself as her mind tried to consider the possibility that Katja was exactly who she said she was. “Look even if I were to believe you and that is a big IF- I don’t want or need a guardian angel. You will be just wasting your time.” She took a deep breath and let it out slowly trying to clear her mind. “Sorry to interrupt your meal,” and with that, she turned to leave. She needed to get out and get some fresh air or else she might actually want to believe that someone in this forsaken world cared about her.

Katja was pleased with herself. She had chosen wisely. The pain in this witch’s life filled the air around her, feeding the demon and drawing her in for a bite. Playing a guardian angel was by no means a new trick and she quite favoured it. Everyone trusts an angel and when they need one, they’re rarely shy to hold back on telling her what it is they desire. Only, this one didn’t want saving…

So yes, it took away the joy of corrupting a lost soul but it was one step closer to a closed deal. After all, what has she got left to lose if she’s turning down an angel? Though she had learned something from this already; this girl did not recognise demons on the spot. That was always a good thing. Well, for Katja that is. Not so much for the soul. Especially as Katja very rarely moved onto other meals without finishing the first.

As Kat went to leave, Katja got into her head and spoke to her inside her mind. ”There is nothing crazy about letting an immortal entity help you reach the afterlife to spend eternity in paradise. I have seen the dawn of time and watched every soul that ever existed travel into the afterlife. This life is a test. Fail it and you’ll be punished forever. Pass it and you’ll never feel misery ever again.”

Motioning to the seat by her, she spoke this time. ”Please, take a seat. Life can only get better if you stay.” Looking outside, she waited for something to happen. Bouncing around the minds of those outside, she tickled all the desires, seeing which one could be swayed to step into the light. And sure enough, a fist was thrown and a fight began by the doorway of the diner.
