Welcome to Faces in TheNight

Welcome to New York, home of the city that never sleeps. That couldn’t be more true. Angels and Demons play tug-o-war with souls while Reapers look to claim them and take them to their rightful destination. Humans fight to be heard while Witches fear to be seen. Shape shifters are the outcasts of this world, but refuse to be put down. Werewolves claw to be at the top of the food chain, but Vampires are always plotting and scheming to be superior. Just like the land, the waters are also teeming with life as the Merpeople have their own network of life and enemies to defend against. Valyrian is a bustling realm of Elves and Dragons that fight their own war.

Welcome to a world where nightmares come to life. The day time isn't all that safe either. Who do you align with? Where do you stand in this crazy life? Or will you be just another face in the night?

It is always in a lush, green forest where her nightmare begins. Bathed in daylight, the wooded pathways and the smell of pine feel like home. She spent her entire life living beside the forest and took comfort in all the familiar sights and sounds that the feeling of unease always felt somehow misplaced when darkness eventually fell. But fall it did. Every night, shadows fell around, and the moonlight rose, spilling an eerie kind of light onto the forest floor. She had felt it many times before; that feeling of eyes on her and the hair rose on the back of her neck. But no matter how many times she looked back, she could never see anything looking out at her through the darkness. It was always there though; an oppressive presence in the back of her mind that reminded her that she was never truly alone. That no matter how safe the light felt, it would always fade, and darkness would reign once more.

In the sharp edges of her memory, she could relive it all in painful accuracy; from the pool of pale blonde hair to the way her blood reflected in the moonlight. The eyes were always the worst part though. She could have handled anything except her eyes; beautiful, green, and so full of terror. She had watched in sickened, agonized silence as the fear faded away into nothingness as death fell like a shadow across her features. She hadn’t even known the girl; not really. She was just someone she had went to school with, but Victoria was the only one to remember her death and it was a burden she would carry until her own.

No, that was not entirely true. There was one other who remembered her death. The one who caused it; the shadow in the night with eyes that never strayed too far from her mind. She remembered him too, but not in the same vivid detail as his victim. She could only remember the bloody smile and the eyes that matched. Night had cloaked him, and terror and the influence of alcohol kept his identity vague within her mind’s eye. He was only a shape in the night, but his words haunted her forever.

“It is not your time yet my dear… But even beauty cannot escape death for long.”

* * *

Victoria was born and raised in a relatively small town in Northern California. She is the only child of Christopher and Michelle Laurent and her mother died in a car accident when she was only ten years old. Despite her mother’s death, Tori grew up in a loving household under her father’s care. In many regards, her upbringing was relatively typical. She attended school, had her friends, and did all the typical activities befitting a young girl. It wasn’t until she was sixteen that her perspective on life changed, forever altering the path she saw before her and determining what she ultimately valued above all else.

As was typical in high-school, the kids got together and threw a bonfire party out in the woods one weekend and Victoria naturally attended with her friends, looking for a good time and intending to let off some stem. After a few drinks that made her hazier than she intended, she walked a little farther away from the campsite then she intended. She was not the first to wonder out there on her own however. The sight she stumbled on is one that haunts her to this day and in those few terrifying moments, she watched a young woman die and the monster who murdered her escape into the night, leaving her forever looking over her shoulder for the day that death comes to meet her.

In the first few months after the event, Tori did not know how to handle her terror and grief. Every time night fell, she found herself peeking out her window, as if expecting to see something lurking in the shadows ready to take her away. Her health started to deteriorate as paranoia set in and her sleep suffered. Her father, unsure of how to help her, sent her to counselling and tried to get her out of herself in any way he could think of. In the end, Tori could not say for sure what exactly got her out of her fear and prompted into her action, but it happened one day when she came across her father’s old bow in the garage.

Action and resolve became the keys to her changing perceptions. She began to teach herself archery and signed up for self-defense classes, feeling stronger with the idea of protection. Information she gathered by researching and she began to arm herself with her knowledge and skills. After some time, she began to realize exactly what it was she wanted to do. Fear had nearly destroyed her and the world, while being a dangerous place, was worthy of protecting. There were so many people who could not protect themselves from the evils out in the world and she believed that she could find some way to help them. Even if one person was all she could save, it would make everything she had worked towards worthwhile.

That was the thought that set in her mind: help the vulnerable, protect the weak and leave the world better than the way she found it. She continued to work, train, and learn and when she graduated high-school, she left her father and her small hometown life to live in the big city where she thought she could do the most good. City life was an adjustment at first to be sure, but she loved the hustle and bustle of daily life and even the dangerous aspects of the city were somewhat exciting. But even with the city’s seducing nature, she keeps herself focused with the memory of death and the words that haunted her so. Even beauty cannot escape death.

Personality

Victoria is best described as idealistic and mild-tempered. She is quick to smile and laugh and has no problems making friends (although since moving to the city, she hasn't had many lasting relationships because of her hectic life between work and school and training). Although she has what might be described as the typical 'girl next door' vibe with her appearance and gentle nature, she has a steel resolve and fights hard for her convictions. She is bright, kind, a perhaps a little naive at times, but she is tougher than she looks. She has a tendency to throw herself fully into any task, often letting her own goals consume her. Nothing quite devastates her more than failure and she agonizes over past mistakes.

Artemis

25. Mountain. PM. Character # 1.

Heart pounding and adrenaline rising, Victoria raced towards her goal in a panic. She was so close, so very close, but she feared that failure was inevitable this time. Still, Tori gritted her teeth and ran harder, pushing her body to its limits as she gave this everything she had left. She had to make it. She absolutely had to. She simply could not help but succeed when she was this close. A light flickered ahead of her and for one beautiful moment, she thought she had done it. Her prize was right there in front of her, just waiting for her to arrive and set her life on track once more. But one misstep was all it took to send her skidding to a sudden halt on the sidewalk to keep from tumbling sideways. For a few moments, she took stock of herself and determined that no, her ankle was not busted and she still had all her belongings on her; which she counted as a small kind of success, but when she whipped her head back towards her ultimate goal, she groaned in frustration. The bus had pulled away from the curb and was heading off towards downtown. Fantastic. She had missed it yet again.

With no bus left to chase (and being very aware of the fact that she might have just caused a scene with her mad sprint down the street), Tori walked the rest of the way to the bus stop to wait for the next one. Every morning tended to follow this same routine. She would set her alarm for a reasonable hour the previous night, inevitably sleep through it, and then have to rush to get ready and make it down the street to where she caught her morning bus to school. Mornings had never been this challenging for her when she had been in high school. But then again, she hadn’t quite piled her plate so high back then. Between classes in the morning, work in the afternoon/evenings, and her other ‘extracurricular’ activities keeping her busy, she rarely got the prescribed eight hours. It probably wasn’t the healthiest lifestyle, but she was still young and she made do.

Tori leaned against the post and stared out at the street, taking stock of the last few months. Moving to a big city had been a big change from where she had grown up. When she had first come here, it had only been as a means to accomplish her goal. But now that she was here, she could admit that she liked city life. There was something so satisfying about the general hustle and bustle of the city. There were so many people running around, living their own lives, and so much activity that it was a bit overwhelming. But there was something peaceful that could be found with the chaos. Something that made her feel a little more in tuned with the world around her. She liked living here and despite the goals that ultimately brought her here, the massive city-scape somehow made it easier for her to forget the harshness of life.

That is, until something happened to bring it all rushing back. Violence was not uncommon within the city and while she tried her best to always be prepared, she always felt that same twinge of fear whenever she was out alone at night. With so many people crammed into such a small place, she could never be too sure about who was around her and what their intentions were. She always had something on her that she could use as a weapon and she had tried her best to train herself in defensive and offensive moves should the time come when she needed to use them, but she was no huntress and she could not make herself look for trouble.

Sometimes, she felt so weak. She wanted to do good and help people, but after she had moved here, she found she did not quite know how to start. It was one thing to be prepared and have a plan of action, but what exactly should she do to curb violent attack against humanity? She wasn’t altogether sure but she was wasn’t quite comfortable with the idea of walking around and looking for a fight. So she explored other alternatives; looked into legalized protections and tried to develop an idea of how to create a lasting sense of peace within the world they all lived in. She knew her thoughts were idealistic and perhaps a little foolish, but there had to be something more they could all do to create a better world than the one they currently lived in.

Tori’s mind pulled back into the present as a bus rolled up next to the curb beside her. Thoughts for another time then, she mused as she hiked her bag further up her arm and stepped forward as the doors opened. She had another day to face and if yesterday was any indication, it was not going to be an easy one.
